How to hide IP address in Android devices

How to hide IP address in Android devices

You need to disguise your IP address of your Android smartphone to access a site that blocked access from India or for privacy reasons?  Perfect, you're in the right place at the right time.

With the guidance of today, we will discover how to hide IP address in Android devices, thanks to some solutions that allow you to navigate from smartphones and tablet using a foreign address (U.S. or UK). They are all very easy to use and free, at least in their basic version. Let's get right to work!

If you're looking for a solution on  how to hide IP address in Android devices, the first Android app that I suggest you try is HotSpot Shield. This is a VPN (virtual private network) that lets you disguise the IP of your smartphone/tablet with a u.s. address and thus provides access to blocked websites (in previous posts we have discussed about blocking websites as well, you can check it here(link)). The basic version is free but is displaying some banners and a speed of navigation rather low.

To install HotSpot Shield on your Android Terminal, open the Google Play Store, look for the app within the latter and tap on install button, and then click I accept. When the operation is complete, start HotSpot Shield and create a free account to use the service.

To do this, press the button Yes, protect my connection!, then tap Continue and fill in the form proposed to you by typing your email address and password you want to use to access HotSpot Shield in their respective fields. Finally, press the Create account button and you're done.

At this point, to hide IP address in Android  devices using HotSpot Shield, tap on the button Protect my connection! located on the main screen of the app and wait until the connection is established to the VPN.

When the connection is made, HotSpot Shield icon in the Android status bar will turn green and you can surf the Internet using your IP in disguise. To verify the change of address, open the browser, connected to any of the sites that allow you to display your IP (e.g. whatismyipaddress.com) and you should be connected from the USA.

At the end of your session work (or leisure) online, you can stop the HotSpot Shield connection going into the main app screen and pressing the button Turn off protection. Is it not easy?

If you don't want that HotSpot Shield starts automatically when you start Android, tap on the Menu button located in the upper right corner (the icon with three horizontal lines), select Settings from the box that pops up and remove the checkmark from the option Start  on boot. If you want to subscribe to a paid service plan (without advertising and faster Web surfing), tap on the text Get More and choose which subscription.

Other good VPN applications you could try on your smartphone or tablet Android are TunnelBear, which offers 500 MB of free traffic per month giving you the ability to disguise your IP with a us or UK address, and Tigervpns VPN offering 500 MB of free traffic for all new subscribers.

How to Use Google Maps Without An Internet Connection

How to Use Google Maps Without An Internet Connection

You can search for nearby places and get driving directions while offline.

Losing your Internet connection while traveling can be frustrating, especially when you’re relying on your phone to tell you where to go. Whether you’re stuck in a subway car underground or have lost your signal while driving in a remote rural area, we’ve all be there at least once.
It’s a good idea to plan ahead for these types of situations by downloading maps for offline use in Google Maps. Once you’ve downloaded an area, you’ll be able to get directions and view points of interest for that region even without an Internet connection.
Still, there are some limitations to keep in mind. You can’t get walking, transit, or cycling directions while offline; only driving directions are available. If you’re not driving, using Google Maps offline can still be helpful for viewing nearby places when you’re stuck without a signal.
It’s also important to remember that these maps eventually expire because Google needs to update them to make sure they’re accurate. To see the areas you’ve saved and when they expire, open Google Maps, tap the menu icon, and select “Offline areas.”
Here’s how to download an offline map:
  1. Launch the Google Maps app on your Android phone or iPhone. Make sure you’re signed into your Google account.
  2. Search for the city you’d like to download.
  3. Tap the bar at the bottom of the screen with the name of the place you’ve just searched for.
  4. Tap the button that says “Download.”
  5. Google will then show you a map of the area and ask if you’d like to download it. Tap “Download” again to confirm.

How to Enable Guest Mode on Android

How to Enable Guest Mode on Android

Enable-Guest-Mode-on-Android

Ever needed to hand your Android smartphone to someone else for a while? If yes, then there's a good chance that you were worried about how easily they could go through your personal data or end up changing preferences or even deleting information like contacts or messages.
Fortunately, Android 5.0 Lollipop ships with a system-level guest mode. This lets you quickly switch to a separate guest profile that doesn't have any of your personal data such as messages, installed apps or preferences. This is as good as a fresh install of Android 5.0 Lollipop and the moment you switch back to your Google account, all data saved in the guest mode is removed. This makes it a particularly effective way of letting someone else use your phone for a while.
Here's how to enable guest mode on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull down the notifications bar.
  2. Tap your avatar on the top right twice.
  3. Now you'll see three icons - your Google account, Add guest and Add user.
  4. Tap Add guest.
  5. Now your smartphone will switch to guest mode. This may take some time and the phone may be slightly slow initially, but in our tests with a Nexus 5 it worked well after a few minutes.
  6. When you're done with guest mode, you can easily revert to your Google account. Follow steps 1 and 2 above and tap the icon that shows your Google account. This will delete all data saved in the guest session as well.
If your smartphone doesn't have Android 5.0 Lollipop installed, you should check for a pre-loaded guest mode. Some brands such as Xiaomi, LG, Samsung and Huawei pre-load an app that enables you to use guest mode on your smartphone. Different brands name this app differently, so look in your phone's app drawer for apps with names similar to Kids' Mode or Guest Mode. Some Android phones have guest mode embedded at the system level. For example the LG G3 has a guest mode that you can access by going to Settings > General > Privacy > Guest Mode.
If your phone doesn't have this feature, the most effective way to keep your personal data safe is by locking down certain apps. We've written a detailed guide on how to stop others from accessing your Android apps so be sure to check that. If you just want to keep Google Chrome away from prying eyes, you can read our guide to enabling guest mode in Google Chrome.

How to Enable Guest Mode in Google Chrome

How to Enable Guest Mode in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is one of our favourite browsers on iOS, Android and Windows. We like it because it works well and allows you to easily import your preferences and other browser data across platforms. While there's no doubt about how useful this feature is, it can become a problem if you're not the only one using your computer.
How to Enable Guest Mode in Google Chrome
If someone else takes your phone or computer and starts using Google Chrome, that person will have access to all your saved passwords. Another problem is that if you, like us, have spent some time setting up Google Chrome to suit your needs, then you might not want anyone else to change things. If you're signed in to Google Chrome via the same account on two devices, you remove an extension on one computer and it disappears on the other too. So it's not too hard to imagine a situation where someone deletes a whole bunch of important bookmarks and extensions, leaving you to set up the browser again.
In order to avoid this, you can enable guest mode in Google Chrome before handing your machine over to someone. This lets others use Google Chrome without messing around with your browser preferences. Here's how to enable it.

Windows and Mac
The steps to enable guest mode in Google Chrome are the same for Windows and Mac users.
  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. On the top-right, you will see the name of the person whose Google account the browser is linked to. Click the name.
  3. Click Switch person.
  4. Click Browse as Guest.
  5. This will open a new window where you won't be able to access any of your browser data. Guest mode is like incognito mode, which doesn't save browser history or cookies. The only difference is that you can't even access bookmarks or other preferences.
Unfortunately, the solution isn't as straightforward on Android or iOS. The method described below is a bit cumbersome but it's the best possible way to do this as of now.
iOS
Follow these steps on Google Chrome for iPhone and iPad.
  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Tap the three vertical dots on the top-right.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Your Google account name and email address will be right at the top. Tap it.
  5. Tap Manage Accounts.
  6. Tap Use Chrome without a Google account.
  7. This will stop synchronising Chrome data on your iOS device with your Google account. Now on your iOS device, you can clear bookmarks or any other browser data you don't want others to change.
  8. When the other person has returns your iOS device, you can quickly get back all your data by signing in to your Google account again. Just follow steps 1-5 and then select your Google account or tap Add another account and sign in.
Android
  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Tap the three vertical dots on the top-right.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap your Google account name and email address that appear right at the top.
  5. Tap the blue button at the top to turn sync Off.
  6. This will stop syncing your data with your Google account. Now you can clear any preferences on Google Chrome for Android without disturbing the carefully configured settings on other devices.
  7. When you don't need guest mode anymore, you can quickly enable sync by following steps 1-4 and then tapping the button at the top to turn sync On.

How to Stop Others From Accessing Your Android Apps

How to Stop Others From Accessing Your Android Apps

You hand over your phone to someone to make a call, or look up something on the Internet and the next thing you know, they're browsing through your messages. Most people know better than to be so rude, but we all know that one person who really doesn't understand why this is bad manners.
It's not like everyone has something to hide, but these days we all carry a virtual record of our lives in our pockets. Our smartphones have a lot of personal information we do not want other people to see.
One way to protect your privacy is to set a password lock on your phone. While that serves the purpose in most cases, it's no use when you pass your phone to someone for a quick call or if they want to check something. It's for times like these that a password lock for individual apps can come in handy. There are lots of apps for Android that let you do this, but Smart AppLock is our favourite.
This is how you can set up Smart AppLock to protect your apps from the curious friend:
  1. Download App Lock.
  2. When you first fire up the app, it'll ask you to set the password. The default password is 5555, as you'll see in the password hint on screen. Tap those numbers in to open the app.
  3. Now the App Lock tab will show up.
  4. Tap the green + button at the bottom.
  5. Select apps you want to lock down with a password. All you need to do is tap the checkmark next to each app that you want to protect.
  6. Tap ADD.
  7. Next to each app, you'll see a button labelled FAKE. Tap this button to enable a fake app crash message. Whenever you open that app, you will see a message like, "Unfortunately, WhatsApp has stopped." This will show the name of whichever app you have enabled the setting for. If someone sees the message and taps OK, Smart AppLock returns to the home screen. But if you tap and hold OK, you'll be asked to enter the app password.
That's it. Now all the apps you selected are hidden behind a password. But it's a good idea to change the default password and here's how you can do that:
  1. Swipe left to the Settings tab.
  2. Tap Password & Pattern Settings.
  3. Tap Password and key a new numeric code.
  4. Tap Password hint to replace the hint set by default.
  5. You can also switch to a pattern lock, gesture lock or character password lock. TapLock Type to switch.
This will set a common password for all the apps you picked. If you want a different password for any of your apps, try these steps.
  1. Open Smart AppLock and swipe left to the Settings tab.
  2. Tap Multiple Passwords.
  3. Tap Add Password.
  4. Here you can select individual apps by tapping Locked Apps.
  5. Tap the checkmark next to the apps you want to lock and tap Add.
We really liked Smart AppLock because it doesn't just protect your apps. It does this in a way that prevents any unauthorised user from knowing that something is up. This way, you can keep your stuff private, without getting into a fight with someone over it. Do you create password locks for individual apps? Let us know how via the comments.

Rooting your Android

Rooting your Android

What is rooting?

Is the allure of being a superuser tempting you? Android rooting opens up a world of possibility, but it can also void your warranty, or even leave you with a bricked device. Yes, when it comes to rooting your Android, you’ll want to know the benefits as well as the risks.
Manufacturers and carriers have a vested interest in dissuading you from rooting. The act of rooting can be inherently dangerous. Even so, for the careful user, the risk is minimal, and the potential benefits are impressive. This guide will walk you through the necessary steps to root your phone. Some devices can be rooted in minutes. Others take a little research. One thing is clear: rooting your phone can be one of the best ways to tap into the deep potential of your Android device.

Rooting is jailbreaking for Androids and allows users to dive deeper into a phone’s sub-system. Essentially, it’ll allow you to access the entire operating system and be able to customize just about anything on your Android. With root access, you can get around any restrictions that your manufacturer or carrier may have applied. You can run more apps, you can overclock or underclock your processor, and you can replace the firmware.
The process requires users to back up current software and flash (install) a new custom ROM (modified version of Android).

Why would you root?

sony unlock
One of the most obvious incentives to root your Android device is to rid yourself of the bloatware that’s impossible to uninstall. You’ll be able to set up wireless tethering, even if it has been disabled by default. Additional benefits include the ability to install special apps and flash custom ROMs, each of which can add extra features and streamline your phone or tablet’s performance. A lot of people are tempted by the ability to completely customize the look of their phones. You can also manually accept or deny app permissions.
You won’t find a lot of amazing must-have apps when you root, but there are enough to make it worthwhile. For example, some apps allow you to automatically back up all of your apps and all of their data, completely block advertisements, create secure tunnels to the Internet, overclock your processor, or make your device a wireless hotspot.

Why wouldn’t you root?

There are essentially three potential cons to rooting your Android.
  • Voiding your warranty: Some manufacturers or carriers will use rooting as an excuse to void your warranty. It’s worth keeping in mind that you can always unroot. If you need to send the device back for repair, simply flash the original backup ROM you made and no one will ever know that it was rooted.
  • Bricking your phone: Whenever you tamper too much, you run at least a small risk of bricking your device. The obvious way to avoid it happening is to follow instructions carefully. Make sure that the guide you are following works for your device and that any custom ROM you flash is designed specifically for it. If you do your research and pay attention to feedback from others, bricking should never occur.
  • Security risks: Rooting may introduce some security risks. Depending on what services or apps you use on your device, rooting could create a security vulnerability. For example, Google refuses to support the Google Wallet service for rooted devices.

How to prepare your Android device for rooting

Samsung Galaxy S5 Screen Settings
Three rooting programs that have garnered some attention in the past few months areTowelroot, Kingo Root, and KingRoot. They will root your device in the time it takes to brush your teeth. However, these rooting programs are only compatible with Android devices running below Android 5.1 Lollipop. For example, King Root claims it will root over 100,000 devices, and even some running Android 5.0, but the majority of newer devices running Android 5.1 and higher don’t make the list.
Here’s Kingo’s list of compatible devices, and the following links by manufacturer are what KingRoot can handle:
If you’re looking to root a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge running Android 5.1 or higher, the above methods will not work. While they might have worked on Android 5.0, Android 5.1 is a completely different story since a modified kernel needs to be flashed in order to achieve root. The kernel is the core of the operating system and it controls the hardware. Android cannot run without it.
You can follow the instructions that Max Lee posted here to root your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge on Android 5.1.
The same goes for Nexus devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Chainfire has posted modified kernels for those devices over at XDA.
The bottomline is that you will see many developers touting how their tool takes care of all Android devices, but there simply is no such tool.
If your phone is not compatible with either of the above applications, you’ll have to spend a little time researching ways to root on Android forums. The best place to start is XDA Developers Forum. Look for a thread on your specific device and you’re sure to find a method that has worked for other people. It’s worth spending some time researching the right method for your device.

Preparation for root

Back up everything that’s important to you before you start. You should also always back up your current ROM before you flash a new one.

You’ll want to ensure that your device is fully charged before you begin.
You’ll also need to turn on USB debugging, as well as OEM Unlocking.
Open Settings on your device. If  you do not see Developer Options toward the bottom of the Settings screen on your device, follow these steps to activate them.
  1. Tap on About Phone and find the Build Number.
  2. Tap on the Build Number seven times and the Developer Options will appear on the main page of the Settings.
  3. Tap on the Back key to see the Developer Options.
  4. Tap on Developer Options.
  5. Check to enable USB Debugging.
  6. Check to enable OEM Unlocking.

Installing the Android SDK tools

Some Android rooting methods require you to install ADB and Fastboot. Follow ourinstructions here to download and install them.

Unlock your bootloader

Before you get started, You will also need to unlock your bootloader. Bootloader is a program that determines which applications will run in your phone’s startup process.
Unlocking your bootloader will allow you to customize your device. Manufacturers have responded to a demand for customization. Many of them have provided methods to help you unlock the bootloader on their website, though they are generally provided for developers, and they usually require you to sign up or register an account first.
Some manufacturers and carriers don’t allow bootloader unlocking, but you can often find a way around that with some searching (try the XDA Developers forum).

How to root your Android device with Towelroot

One of the easiest methods of rooting is through Towelroot. This option works on mostAndroid devices, (it was designed to root the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5) but not all–specifically some Motorola and HTC devices. Unlike other rooting programs that require downloading and running a program on your computer, Towelroot will root your device by simply downloading and running the app. No computer needed. However, Towelroot will only work with devices that have a kernel bill date earlier than June 3, 2014.
towelroot
To use Towelroot, you’ll have to enable your device to install apps from unknown sources. This can be accessed by clicking on Settings > Security > Unknown Sources. Now you’ll be able to download apps from outside the Google Play store.
Now go to Towelroot in your phone’s browser and click on the Lambda symbol.

How to use Kingo Android Root

Kingo Root can be used on a Windows based computer or directly on your Android device using the app.
First, check to see if your device is compatible with Kingo. Their site provides a list of compatible devices.
Then, download Kingo Android Root for Windows or download the Kingo Android Root APK to install directly on your Android device.
If you have selected to use the Windows software, make sure to enable the USB debugging mode on your phone.
Kinga Android Root
Once you’ve enabled USB debugging on your device, run the program on your PC and connect your Android to your PC with a USB cord. The program should detect your device and a message asking if you’d like to root will appear. Select “root” and then hang tight. Kingo will only take a few minutes to grant super user privileges.
If you would rather try rooting your device without a computer, then follow the instructions below:
  • Install the Kingo Root APK (linked above).
  • Open the Kingo Root app.
  • You will see One Click Root if your device is compatible. Tap on it.
  • Be patient because it can take a while.
  • If successful, you will see a large check mark with the words Root successfully below it.

How to root your Android device using KingRoot

Just like Kingo Root, KingRoot can be used to root your device from a Windows desktop or directly on your phone or tablet using an app.
With over 100,000 supported devices, there’s a good chance KingRoot will work on yourAndroid phone or tablet. Use the links below to find out if your device is compatible.
You can download the Windows software here or the Android APK here. We recommend using the Android app tool since it’s so much easier. After you have installed the APK file, just follow the instructions below:
  • Open the KingRoot app
  • You will see Try to Root if your device is compatible. Tap on it.
  • Be patient because it can take a while.
  • If successful, you will see a large check mark with the words Root successfully below it.
